Dave Potter on our Gus Kuhn Commando?
As bought, but with some very special parts on it.
Our Gus Kuhn Racer
When our Karl sent me a picture of a golden Commando in our workshop, saying the customer wanted it made roadworthy and then see, I looked at it and realized this was no standard production Commando. It simply had too many little details that were only used on genuine Norton Production Racers. Asking the customer about its origin he told us he bought it as an ex-Potter race bike from Gus Kuhn in February 1972, raced it for a while, and then planned to convert it to a normal road bike but family and business commitments never let him get that project finished.
First step back to original, April 2023
Rebuild:
I asked Karl to buy it for us and since the owner was very conservative in the figure he wanted Karl actually paid him more than he asked for.
When he bought the bike from Gus Kuhn he was told Dave Potter raced it in 1971, winning the production class championship and racing it at the TT.
The new owner then raced it in club races, winning one race in Brands Hatch and getting 4th places in the unlimited class and a second place in the end-of-season meeting at Brands Hatch.
Fortunately the original race parts still existed so we have now started to convert the bike back to its race specification.
As a first step we put most of the race parts back on to get a visual impression and to see what parts are missing to get the bike back to its racing days guise.
