1954 "Trusty" Tractor with Norton Industrial Engine
1954 Trusty
When we bought the "Elephant's Grave" cache of ex-Wolverhampton factory Norton parts a few years ago the seller had a "Trusty" tractor that we tried to include in the deal but he wanted nothing of it- it was the vehicle he had learnt to drive on in his childhood.
So when we saw an advert for another "Trusty" in autumn 2017 we simply had to buy it. "Trusty" tractors, produced near London from the 1930s till 1962 used a variety of engines.
Over a long period Norton industrial engines- and, frankly, we didn't even know these were ever produced- of the "Big4" type were the standard engine on "Trusty"s.
The rudimentary construction of these cheap tractors for the smallholders makes for a parts list with only 9 pages though, to be fair, the engine is listed as a single part- obviously "Trusty" owners had to turn to their local Norton agent for engine spares!
Our ex-MD Nick has put the "Trusty" into fully operational order so we can now drift it round the yard at the high speeds it is accumstomed to (?) at our "Open Days".
